Hi everyone!

It's my turn Maggie and I've prepared a picture tutorial on 'Inserts'.

You can make them as simple or as intricate as you'd like. The easiest way is to cut a piece of paper a little bit smaller then the card itself and then fold it in half. I've used 90gsm white paper with silky smooth finish or card stock matching the front of the card .

The basic idea is to cut the insert with shaped scissors...

or punch the insert and stamp inside it.

You can also punch the edge of the insert to add more interest.

This one has been cut with square label die and the edges have been inked with a green ink matching the front of the card. I've also punched a strip of cardstock and attached it at the bottom. I also used stitches stamp closer to the edges.

Here I've punched the top and bottom of the insert and layered white on top of red one. I've also stamped 'Merry Christmas' in the centre.

The inside of the card has been stamped with snowflake stamps. Next I've used two layers of card stock - both of them stamped with snowflakes and embellished with some gems.

Here I've used some backing paper where I've punched the edges. I layered it with white card inking edges again and stamping some swirls.

Here is an example of a gate fold card where the inside of the card is the main part of it.

Here I've cut circles using scalloped circles dies and I stamped a sentiment in the middle.

I've made a stencil by punching out some flowers. Then I used the stencil to embellish the insert with flowers. I also added some flat backed pearls to add more interest. The background has been cut using label die.

Here the insert is die cut vellum and die cut backing paper, I've inked the edges and stamped 'Love from...' sentiment. Using vellum under a layer of other backing paper means that I don't have worry about glue being visible.

Here I've used embossing folder, the same which I used at the front of the card, to emboss the insert. I inked the raised image, next I covered it with a piece of pink cardstock and added some gems.

Here, again, the insert of the card is the main part of it. I found some birthday verses online, printed them out and cut with label die.

  1. To create a 3D frame cut strips of card, around 4inches width and then fold in half lengthwise, then cover with a pretty frame you have made out of pretty card :-)

  2. Thanks ladies. My Tip for this week would be when working with a monochromatic colour scheme, don't be afraid to stamp the image out several times and use a variety of punches to add visually pleasing texture to your project!

  4. Hmm, I've never left a tip before! I just found your blog! I only recently discovered how much easier it is to apply rhinestones or pearls with tweezers! Thanks for a great challenge!

  5. Wonderful tutorial.

I was not sure whre to leave my tip, on my blog or in the comment section. I figured I would do both.

Tip: To help make a digital image not look so "digital", just added some glitter, embossing, pearls, rhinestones or even print out a few and layer them like paper tole.

  6. What a great challenge blog. I am always looking for the next gret tip. I don't know if you have this one but here it is. When trying to put ribbon or embroidery floss through a button or a small hole that you punched I use the plastic floss for braces. It is flexible has a large loop at one end so you can hold on to whatever you are trying to put through the small hole and the other end is long and bends so it is easy to pull through first try. They come in a portable case and can be bought almost anywhere they sell dental floss.
    Happy Creating,

  7. My tip, Define your edges. Maybe your CAS or lost of stuff, but ither way difinitive layers can make all the difference. so ink 'em, distress 'em, glitter 'em, or add some backing paper, but don't just leave them and you will notice a huge differenc in that one small step!

  10. Love bling! I hate however to see the acetate it's on so when I'm using single pearls or gems I cut both sides of the acetate sheet before lifting the pearl with my tweezers... then I just have the sticky under the pearl but no tabs to show beside them!

  13. I have 3 tips that I want to share this week.

First tip is a technique that I learned a year ago and have only used it one other time. Emboss white core card stock with Cuttlebug dots embossing folder and then sand lightly to reveal the white core. Use markers on the embossed dots to make very cute dotted paper to match you project.

Second tip is the way I did a shaker for my card. I recycled the plastic dome shape from some stickers that I bought. This one was pretty shallow so it worked perfectly. I actually used two of them exactly the same size so that I could stamp a little fairy on the inside of the top one to make her look like she is flying.
Here is a link to my card.

My final tip this week is a really great cheap homemade stamp cleaner/conditioner. Can be used for rubber as well as acrylic stamps.
Mix in 10 oz. spray bottle, 2 TBLS Glycerin (purchase at drug store), 1 tsp. baby shampoo or baby wash, 8 oz. distilled water. Can be mixed in larger bottle and then poured into smaller spray bottle. I just spray a small amount on a cleaning pad and then rub your stamp back and forth to clean and condition. You will be amazed how great your rubber stamps will feel.....even the really old ones this will condition them so they feel like new again.
Note- If using Staz-On ink on rubber stamps you will need to use some of the Staz-On cleaner first and then use the homemade stamp cleaner/conditioner to keep your stamps conditioned.

  14. My tip: I love ribbon crisp and fresh looking so I frequently run my ribbon thru my hair iron on low setting or use my tiny seam iron. Works like a charm!
Great blog...just found it. I'll be back!

  15. Thanks for the challenge and for the inspiration.

  16. My tip is about keeping track of what cards you sent to who so that you don't send them one with the same image next year. So when you take your photos of your cards for your blog, keep the photo in a folder on your computer, and give each photo a title that tells you who the card went to and what date. I do this after my young niece pointed out that her birthday card had a very similar picture to the year before. CoB

  17. Hello and thanks for such a great challenge and all the great tips! My tip is to use Martha Steward craft glue when "blinging up" chipboard. I used it on my card today with German Glass glitter. I found that this glue works the best after testing tons of those on the market. It also is strong enough to hold the GGG since its a heavier glitter. Thanks and happy crafting!

  18. Fab tutorial and great DT cards too!
My top tip this week is to use suitable paper for colouring your image ... watercolour pencils will look a million times better on watercolour paper, and copics blend beautifully when you use paper which will soak the ink through (I've been using c/s from Lily of the Valley and its just lovely)!

  19. Can't remember if I have already mentioned this one, but a hair straightener works great for wrinkled ribbon!

  20. My tip is on making the smaller circle easel cards. There is not a lot of room to write a sentiment-so I make another circle and attach it with a brad so it slips right under the card. I flips out to write your greeting and name and it can be decorated with small flowers and butterflies and still lie flat.

    Thanks
    Carol

  21. This is my first time entering your challenge, great idea! my tip is when entering cards for challenges stick the sentiment on with 'Blu tack' blobs not glue dots or tape so later on your can have the correct sentiment when you go to send your card to someone!
